Region VI Spring Encounter ... Will be held in Garden City, KS on April 30 - May 2, 2004.  Bishop Tamayo (our National Episcopal Advisor) had planned to attend this Regional Encounter, but now is unable to do so.  However, Father Pedro Garcia (the National Spiritual Advisor for Cursillo) will be there.  In addition, five of the ten talks from Cala Figuera (which were given at the 2003 National Encounter) will be given in both English and Spanish.
In 1994 during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the first Cursillo Weekend, ten topics were presented at Cala Figuera (in Mallorca).  Eduardo Bonnin, the founder of Cursillo, had been intensely studying various attributes of humanity.  These attributes / topics reflected the focus of study as the Cursillo Movement was being formed by the Holy Spirit.  From this study came the 10 topics re-presented at Cala Figuera in 1994 and also at the 2003 National Encounter in Cincinnati: (1) Person; (2) Freedom; (3) Love; (4) Friendship; (5) Conviction; (6) Sincerity; (7) Criterion; (8) Life; (9) Normality; and (10) Joy.  Five of these ten topics will be given at the Region VI Spring Encounter in Garden City.  All are encouraged to participate and learn more about the roots of Cursillo.

From the Lay Director ... For well over a month now, I thought I knew what it was that I would say when I finally had the time to put words to my thoughts … but interestingly, what I thought this would be about isn’t what is on my heart as I sit at the keyboard.
I began the Advent season with a silent retreat at Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly … Fr. Andrew Apostoli was the retreat master.  Fr. Apostoli tied each set of mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary to a particular part of life’s journey (the Joyful Mysteries are the “take-off” … the Luminous Mysteries are when we fly at “cruising altitude” … the Sorrowful Mysteries are the “turbulence” we encounter along the way … and the Glorious Mysteries are “the landing” … and Fr. Apostoli stressed that we want to make sure we have a smooth landing!!).
As I prepared for the retreat, I was praying a Novena … “Novena in Honor of Jesus … Master, Way, Truth, and Life” … and the Opening Prayer for each day says in part: “Make my ears ‘attentive so that I may listen as those who are taught’ (Is 50:4).  May Your words penetrate deeply into my heart so that I may have the courage to change what has to be changed in my life, and to renew what needs to be renewed so that I may bring Your saving message to all those who desire to know and love You.”
There is a part of each day’s meditation where The Master speaks … and, on the first day, He says (in part):  “You have only one teacher and you are all students [it made me think of School of Leaders … SOL] …  The greatest among you will be your servants” (Mt 23:8, 11).  During My public ministry, I was neither a priest nor a doctor of the Law.  I dedicated Myself to instructing My disciples through the Word of God and the testimony of My own life [formation … evangelization … grounded firmly in prayer … holiness … the three legs of the tripod …].  In Baptism, you joined that ‘school,’ becoming one of My disciples.  I ask you, therefore, to devote some time to reading and entering more deeply Sacred Scripture, especially the Gospels.  The love of God’s Word is a characteristic of discipleship, since men and women of God are formed in the school of the Word.”
When I read/prayed these words, it brought to mind the SOL … and I started thinking about the word “school” … it is a place of learning … where we are formed … there is an openness/willingness to learn because we understand that there is always room to grow … to learn …   In Cursillo, that is exactly what the SOL is – it is a place where we learn more and more about the depth/beauty of Cursillo as a means of drawing us and others to Christ …  Cursillo is entirely centered on Christ … His Word and the Sacraments … the community that He gives us … a time of coming away so that we can listen … a time to sit at the Master’s feet … to sit with others who also desire to win hearts for our Lord, and to share ideas … that’s the basis for SOL … it really IS a very special time …  He teaches us directly in the time that we spend with Him in prayer and the Sacraments … and through others as we listen and share (just as He taught us during the Three Days through the team He called and those He chose for us as family members).  What a gift Cursillo is!!  There are many, many ways that our Lord uses to draw us closer to Himself … ways for us to help others draw closer to Him … but it is through the Cursillo Movement that He is calling me to serve … and service requires sacrifice … and I gladly give to Him as He has given to me.  The “Intention for Today” of the third day of the Novena reads: “For the grace to learn how to pray in the school of Jesus, my Master” … and it IS a grace … a gift … but we need to receive it … and I do …  I would invite each of you to ask our Lord if it is through the Cursillo Movement that He is calling you to serve … please consider becoming part of the SOL … ALL are invited … we need the talents/gifts of each and every one of you …  please come …
Having now said what I had been thinking about for the past month, I’ll now say what came in prayer this morning …  And interestingly, as I reflect on it, it all fits together … Companions on the Journey … being formed … love …
It is December 26th, the day after Christmas … the day we celebrate the feast of St. Stephen, a soldier of love …  Parts of today’s second reading from the Office of Readings are as follows:
“Yesterday we celebrated the birth in time of our eternal King.  Today we celebrate the triumphant suffering of His soldier.  Yesterday our King, clothed in His robe of flesh, left His place in the virgin’s womb and graciously visited the world.  Today His soldier leaves the tabernacle of his body and goes triumphantly to heaven …  And so the love that brought Christ from heaven to earth raised Stephen from earth to heaven; shown first in the king, it later shown forth in His soldier.  Love was Stephen’s weapon by which he gained every battle, and so won the crown signified by his name.  His love of God kept him from yielding to the ferocious mob; his love for his neighbor made him pray for those who were stoning him.  Love inspired him to reprove those who erred, to make them amend; love led him to pray for those who stoned him, to save them from punishment.  Strengthened by the power of his love, he overcame the raging cruelty of Saul and won his persecutor on earth as his companion in heaven.  In his holy and tireless love he longed to gain by prayer those whom he could not convert by admonition.  Now at last, Paul rejoices with Stephen, with Stephen he delights in the glory of Christ, with Stephen he exults, with Stephen he reigns.  Stephen went first, slain by the stones thrown by Paul, but Paul followed after, helped by the prayer of Stephen.  This, surely, is the true life, my brothers, a life in which Paul feels no shame because of Stephen’s death, and Stephen delights in Paul’s companionship, for love fills them both with joy …  Love, indeed is the source of all good things; it is an impregnable defense, and the way that leads to heaven …  My brothers, Christ made love the stairway that would enable all Christians to climb to heaven.  Hold fast to it, therefore, in all sincerity, give one another practical proof of it, and by your progress in it, make your ascent together.”
A second time I am reminded of the song, “Companions on the Journey” …  This morning I stayed after Mass to pray, and after everyone had left, I sang …  I asked for our Blessed Mother’s intercession … I asked for St. Joseph’s intercession … I asked the Christ Child for His blessings upon many, including all of you … a very close moment … an awareness of Christ’s Presence …  I was thinking of St. Francis and the first crèche …  I thought of the Communion of Saints … Mary, St. Joseph, St. Francis, St. Stephen, St. Paul … Sts. Benedict and Scholastica … Sts. Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross … St. Therese … Sts.  Augustine and Monica and Ambrose ... Sts. Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal … Sts. Basil and Gregory … St. Pio … Blessed Mother Teresa … all (including us) directing our attention and love to our Lord … and there I was again, right back to St. Stephen … to St. Paul … a circle of love … with Christ at the center …
St. Paul, patron of Cursillo … pray for us!!  St. Stephen … pray for us!!  All you angels and saints … pray for us!!

From the Spiritual Advisor ...
We are in the Christmas Season and all throughout the Christmas Season (from December 25th  until January 11th, the feast of the Baptism of the Lord), we reflect upon the great mystery of the Incarnation.  The Modern Catholic Dictionary says of Incarnation: “The union of the divine nature of the Son of God with human nature in the person of Jesus Christ.  The Son of God assumed our flesh, body, and soul, and dwelled among us like one of us in order to redeem us.  His divine nature was substantially united to our human nature.”
What an awesome thing for God to become man!  During each of the four Masses for Christmas, the Church asks us during the profession of our faith as we pray the Nicene Creed to genuflect during the two lines “by the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man”.  During other Sunday and Holy Day Masses, when we pray the Creed, we are asked to bow our heads during those two lines, in order to continue to remind us of the awesomeness of God becoming man.  He loves us so much!
God has always been involved in the lives of human beings since He created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden ... since He called Abraham to be the Father of the Chosen People ... since He called Moses to lead His people out of the slavery of Egypt ... since the Prophets and the Kings.  But, God the Father wanted to show how much He loved us ... He sent His Son to earth to become a man, to take on our human nature ... that person we call Jesus ... a Divine Person from all eternity, who now shares our human nature.  He is God “with flesh on”!  How much God loves us!
As we become aware of how much God loves us, He wants us to love Him, to love ourselves, and to love others.  We can only do that as the human persons that we are.  We can only do that with our human bodies (our flesh and blood) and our souls.  We can only do that because of the grace of God given to us.  In some way ... when we love one another as He has loved us, we are responding to His grace, given to us and present within us, and using our bodies to show love for others.  In a way, at those times, we can be “God with flesh on” ... at least we can let Him work through us.
We are not God, but we can say “Yes” to God and allow Him to work through us.  Mary did that when God asked her to be the Mother of His Son ... Mary gave God her flesh ... so we can do in our lives.
Is God asking you to give your flesh to Him ... to allow Him to use you to touch others through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy?  Is He asking you to use your flesh to praise Him in your daily prayer ... and to allow Him to be present to you (your flesh) in quiet time with Him in the Eucharist?  Is He asking you to allow Him to use you to touch others through the Cursillo Movement, by being more regular in your attendance at Group Reunion and Ultreya ... by giving your time to being involved in SOL ... by making a friend, being a friend, and bringing that friend to Christ?  Our repeated “Yes” to God, to ourselves, and to others, is a part of God’s plan ... He wants to work through us, as He wanted to work through Mary ... remember Christ is counting on you!.
As we celebrate the rest of the Christmas Season, and then the Season of Ordinary Time ... and as we pray the Creed (and bow our heads during those two lines), may we continue to remember ... and continue to live out in our daily lives ... the awesomeness of “God with flesh on”!

Sponsoring a Candidate for a Cursillo Weekend

 (1/1/04)
During the 2002 National Cursillo Encounter in Louisville, KY, a synod approach was used to provide input for National to disseminate to all dioceses about how to strengthen the Cursillo Movement in each diocese.  During the session entitled, “Integrating New Cursillistas,” one of the priests told of his father’s having been a realtor and stressing that real estate was all about “location … location … location” … he made the analogy that the task of integrating new cursillistas into the Fourth Day is all about “sponsors … sponsors … sponsors.”  With the February Cursillo Weekends fast approaching, it seems appropriate to refresh ourselves in regard to the responsibilities of sponsoring a candidate to the Cursillo Weekend.  The following quotes from the Cursillo Movement’s Sponsor’s Booklet are intended to provide a little better understanding of exactly what the sponsor’s role is intended to be:
“The purpose of sponsoring is to bring about a change in the environments.  You should have a plan on how you are going to do this.  Part of your plan would include identifying those individuals that have the talents to bring about the change – bring Jesus Christ into their environments.
“So sponsoring is not a haphazard circumstance.  It should be a deliberate act to bring Jesus Christ into the world.  Therefore, you should know your candidates very well.  If they are married, you should know their spouse as well.  Your candidates will become the agents for change in their families, work situations, neighborhoods, social gatherings, etc.  Your candidates will become part of the Christian community that links together with others to bring Jesus Christ to the world.  This is the purpose of sponsoring!

A. “Before the Weekend – In the past, our candidate preparation may have been along the lines of: ‘Oh, you just have to make the Weekend.  I can’t tell you anything about it because I don’t want to spoil it for you.’  Another method (in the past) was: ‘I won’t explain the Group Reunion and Ultreya because this person probably won’t go to the Weekend if they know that there is a follow-up program – and besides, they will be told about Group Reunion and Ultreya during the Weekend.’
“This type of preparation is one of the biggest reasons the Postcursillo programs of Group Reunion, Ultreya, and  School of Leaders are not as successful as they should be.  It can be said that our Postcursillo will only be as good as our Precursillo.  So, candidate preparation is an absolute necessity.
… “Besides sharing these Postcursillo expectations with your prospective candidates, share also all aspects of the Cursillo Weekend.  Explain to them about the complete Cursillo Weekend …”
“Each day of the Cursillo Weekend begins with Morning Prayers and ends with Night Prayers.  Mass is celebrated daily (except Thursday).  Each candidate should be aware that, since prayer is such an intricate part of the Cursillo Movement, there will be other cursillistas that will be continually praying and offering up sacrifices – for the success of the Cursillo Weekend.  There will be proper nourishment provided and also adequate rest periods.  Those that have special needs, such as a particular diet or physical needs, will be attended to properly.  Be sure to explain the costs associated with attending a Cursillo Weekend.
“In addition, insure that your candidate has transportation to the Weekend.  Find out what is needed for a comfortable stay (i.e., linens, towels, toiletries, etc.).  See if your candidate will need assistance with things such as the home, spouse, children, pets, etc.

The Secretariat encourages all cursillistas to continually work in the Precursillo ... pray ... study your environments ... make a friend, be a friend, prepare that friend to encounter Christ during the Three Days.  ALL cursillistas are encouraged to review the Precursillo Guidelines on the back of the blue Sponsor Sheet attached to each Application Form.  Of particular importance, PLEASE remember that:
The following is an abbreviated summary (from the Sponsor’s Booklet) of the Three Days that you may choose to use as you prepare your candidates for the Three Day Weekend and Postcursillo:
“Thursday night – This is a time to get to know each other and to have an overview of the Cursillo Weekend.  This is also the retreat phase of the Cursillo Weekend, which is designed ‘To awaken the moral consciences of all the candidates, beginning with an analysis of their own lives and causing them to desire to encounter God.’ …
“Friday – The focus of Friday should be to help each candidate to have a better understanding of themselves.  Friday should help them discover what motivates them in different situations.
“Saturday – The focus for Saturday is to combine that fully realized self (that they learned about Friday) with a wonderful and loving God.  Saturday helps all the candidates to understand the current relationship that they have with God and should spawn a desire for a still deeper and fuller relationship with God.  …
“Sunday – The focus for Sunday is the understanding of ourselves, our relationship with God and how we can help Him in fulfilling His Will.  We learn what environments we belong to and how we can affect those environments.”

B. “During the Cursillo Weekend – This should be one of the shortest chapters of all Cursillo literature.  During the Cursillo Weekend, the role of the sponsor is to PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY some more.  Sacrificing is also highly encouraged.  Help with any of your candidate’s things that need attending (i.e., transportation, home, spouse, children, pets, etc.).  Then PRAY some more.  Most important – be there at the closing.  If you know that you will be unable to attend the closing, then tell your candidate and make the necessary transportation arrangements (so your candidate can get home).

C. “After the Cursillo Weekend – Be willing to meet with this new cursillista in a one-on-one setting.  Try to answer any questions that this person might have.  If you do not know the answers, assure the new cursillista that you will attempt to find someone who can provide the answers.
“Group Reunion and Ultreya – Be sure that this new cursillista finds a Group Reunion.  It may be yours or a different group entirely.  Of course, the Ultreya is always a good place to find group members … take them to Ultreya!
“Penetrating Environments – Ask about this person’s environments.  Help them develop a plan to change their environment.  Try to give ideas about possible ways of evangelizing each of those shared environments.  Share also your own environments.  This new cursillista may have some suggestions, to share, about evangelizing your environments.
“Personal Contact – It is not enough to send someone to the Cursillo Weekend and expect the team to work miracles.  The new cursillistas need as much personal attention after the Cursillo Weekend as they received during the Cursillo Weekend.  Probably even more!  We must make a conscientious effort to insure that we do all that can be done.”

The above discussion should provide the basics of what is involved in sponsoring a candidate to a Weekend.  You are encouraged to review The Cursillo Movement’s Sponsor’s Booklet as well as the appropriate sections of the Leaders’ Manual in detail.  The sponsor’s role cannot be stressed strongly enough … Christ is counting on you!!

Among the Frequently Asked Questions and Answers about Cursillo – What is the role of a sponsor?

A sponsor for a candidate can either be an individual or, better still, a group.  Whether a group, a community (Ultreya), or an individual, whoever is responsible for enrolling and preparing the candidates - the following is expected:

Reflection on School of Leaders ... by John Springer

Sometimes we get to the point where we think we have done enough ... we are tired and want to take a time-out ... we want someone else to do the work.  We have paid our dues ... we tell ourselves that we need and deserve a break.  Sometimes we feel that way about good things, even  godly things ... prayer ... good works ... Cursillo.  Is not Cursillo a good thing?

I love Cursillo, but sometimes I get tired, and I think to myself that I would like to take a break.  It’s just another thing to add to my busy life when there is already so little time to just relax.  Then, almost immediately, the thought comes into my mind, “Where would I be without Cursillo ... and those who sacrificed and through their sacrifices introduced me to Cursillo?  And what about all the positive changes Cursillo has made in my life (in my 4th day) ... the lives of my family ... the lives of my friends?”  Then when I reflect on how Cursillo has changed my life, I think about how many other lives have been changed through God using me in the Cursillo Movement ... the ripple effect ... the effect of Cursillo changing those lives ... each changed life affecting other lives in a multitude of environments ... and it all started back in March 1996 on “that” Weekend!  So I find it hard to say “no” to God.

Stop and think for a minute ... what Cursillo has done in your life?  Imagine what your life would be without having lived a Cursillo Weekend ... and then taking what you learned and living each 4th day?  Has Cursillo affected your life?  Has your life, in turn, affected the lives of those you encounter in your every day life?  Cursillo has likely had some positive effect on your life and the lives of others ... likely more than we will ever know in this life.  It would be interesting to be given the insight George Bailey was given ... to see how our life and the lives of others would be different had we not lived a Cursillo Weekend ... it IS a wonderful life! ... and Cursillo has helped it to be so.

Imagine what would happen if no one cared ... if no one was willing to give some time each month to do the ongoing work of Cursillo ... to spend time in formation to be a member of the team that will teach the Cursillo Method to candidates ... to devote time praying, thinking, discussing where God is calling / leading us through the Cursillo Movement in our Diocese?  If cursillistas are not there to do the work, what would happen to the lives of those who could be so greatly changed by Cursillo but were not given the opportunity?  Is God calling you to help?  If not you, then who?  Is it time to get involved?  Is God asking you to join the community of Cursillo leaders in our Diocese?

What is the School of Leaders about?  Hear the words of Jesus to the disciples: “Come and see” ... share, pray, and grow with us.  The next SOL will be Jan. 9-10, 2004 at Sacred Heart School, Shelby, NE.

PALANCA

When anyone takes up the work of the conversion and Christian renewal of persons and the evangelization of human groups, it is absolutely indispensable that the entire work be built upon the grace of God.

This is the foundational stone upon which all other human efforts must be based and developed.  This grace can be obtained only through the powerful means of trusting, constant and humble prayer.

Today, perhaps more than ever, it is necessary to remind ourselves that without God we are nothing, bereft of value, and incapable of doing anything.  We must reaffirm that before anything else, the most characteristic mark of the Cursillo methodology ties in the whole concept of Palanca -- prayers, sacrifices and works of mercy.  Palanca must be genuine and offered by communities and individuals living in union with Christ and each other if the effectiveness of all other human efforts in the Movement is to be assured.  This is to take seriously the promise of Christ: “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you.”  (Matt.  7:7)

...Within the (Cursillo) Movement we must be vigilant that the term Palanca not be misunderstood and abused so that incidental trimmings overshadow its interior call and meaning. Colorful posters and banners are not Palanca, neither are flowers, edibles, friendship letters or good wishes.  This is false Palanca under the guise of “nice things.”  Prayer and self-denial are not “nice things”, but they are more effective in securing God’s grace.

It must be understood that letters are not Palanca.  Letters are merely a vehicle in which we convey the actual Palanca being done ... Self-denial is part and parcel of the Christian life.  Any de-emphasis of it in the Movement would indicate a shift away from Christ-centeredness.  In the life of the Church, we are offered seasons such as Lent and Advent to bring us back to the proper spirit.  A better way would be to live in a spirit of Palanca each day.

Palanca offerings should not be limited to the Three Days.  The selection of candidates...the growth of Group Reunions, Ultreyas and especially the work of Secretariats...depend mostly on authentic and generous Palanca offered by all...St. Paul reminds us in Romans 12:1, “Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice dedicated to His service and pleasing to Him.”   –Cursillo Leaders’ Manual (Chapter 12, Palanca)

As a part of my Palanca, I would like to serve the Lord in / through the Cursillo Movement in the following way(s):
